Trying out some more ways of digitally coloring my ink drawings. Some things are working well, some things are not. I'm going to be doing a lot more over the weekend before getting back into Hobbit stuff come Monday. Coincidentally, Monday is when the curtains pull back on this whole project, so I'll link you folks to that when the time comes. From what I've seen so far (just the tip of the iceberg), the work is going to be mind blowing.

The watercolor feel to these is great. Is this Photoshop or Painter? What kind of brushes are you using?
ReplyDeletelove that woman.
ReplyDeleteI like your coloring---ditto to what Will said. I really like the lighting on his nose and chin. It's looking like a drawing from Gipi :)
ReplyDeleteI both like and share the confidence you have in just how much my mind will be blown. I'm starting a similar project with GRRM's game of thrones books.
ReplyDeleteSweet colors-- did you do some ink wash underneath?
This is sick dude.
ReplyDeleteI too would like to know what program/brushes you're using; this looks great!
ReplyDeleteThanks guys! These are just ink wash drawings colored in Photoshop using a lot of the adjustment layers. A lot of trial and error was involved getting the black ink to look like it was originally colorful. I'm using a hard round brush with opacity and size set to pressure. I have to say all of the interesting texture and brushwork comes from the ink wash and not from any particular PS brushes.
ReplyDeleteA layer in color mode is usually good to color the gray areas of an image. I use several "color" layers put on top of the drawing and on top of each other (with different opacities, different colors given what shadow I want to color etc.) for each color I want and on top of these layers I put another one in "multiply" mode where I do the colors I want to put in the whites of the image.
ReplyDeletethat works incredibly well - I had no idea they were your ink wash drawings, and I think I've probably already seen them earlier on your site.
ReplyDeletei think this is a great way to color your work!! looking good! nice hobbit piece too, by the way! excited to see more. (especially the elves.)
