Dungeons and Dragons and Drawings

This is weird. These are sketches of the five characters in the D&D campaign I've been playing in for the past couple of months. I can't say enough in favor of Dungeons and Dragons, despite the (well-deserved) stigma of being really, really nerdy. It's a great exercise in world and character building, and gives you a chance to think creatively and solve problems in a group dynamic.

Unlike videogames, which I still love, the quality of the experience and the end result is directly related to what you bring to the table. The more you invest in character creation and creative thinking (two of my favorite things, obviously), the more fun you have.

My character is the guy with the spear and the mace and the black, dead hands. All of these (especially pages 3 and 4) need some more work before I can do a final character drawing. If you can guess everyone's race and class, I'd be really impressed.

As stated in yesterday's post, I opened up an online shop to buy prints. It is here. They are super good quality and super affordable.

EDIT: Since folks are still guessing the character races/classes, they are as follows: halfling ranger, goliath fighter, dwarf bard, eladrin ranger, human cleric, and the eladrin ranger again.

  3. siiiccckkk! this adds so much depth to the campaign! The top left Berrian in the scan next to Grigori is my favorite. For his bow the black pyramids are spread out through the entire limbs of the bow, not just toward the tips. the sizing looks great man!

  4. Awesome awesome, dude. Grigorii is looking killer. The detail on his horns is pretty great. And I love that he's jolly as hell.

  8. I've noticed a recent trend in D&D playing amongst the internet's art and comic-ing circles, I wonder why that is? Or is it just that it's been happening for a while there just happen to be more realted sketches around now?

And for my geeky question, what edition are you playing?

  10. Got it, Eric! ...almost! The elf and half-elf are the same character, and he's just a particularly muscular Eladrin.

  11. Love the costume of the spearman, so well designed. He looks tough as old nails. And the tats on the larger guy are fantastic. Glad you got your creative mind spinning, very nice results.

  15. My brother showed me this post. It made us give up our SW Saga Edition game and we're planning on jumping into 4e. All because of you! Great job.

  16. Awesome blog man. The dnd campaign looks epic. You'd be right at home with the gaming group here at Pixar.

  17. -Halfling Rogue
-Human Warrior I'll say, because you drew him heavy armours that the barbarian might not be able or not appreciate to wear
    -Dwarf Bard
    -Elf Ranger
-I will have say Human Priest because of the weapons you gave him and I will stick to it because I dont know the 4th edition, but I am sure they created cooler classes that I dont know

  18. I totally agree, I miss playing so much! its been over 3 or 4 years since my group disbanded! I miss them and my own character so much! I think playing was one of the most creative group activities apart from painting that I've been involved in. And since I played with other artists, sometimes we'd just sit around with reference books and perfect our character images, lol
