Weirdos

I'm currently trying to fumble my way through the sketch phase of an assignment at the eleventh hour. Here are some weirdos I've drawn between pages of thumbnails today.

Gollum 6

I don't know that I'll ever be satisfied with Gollum's design. I like all the elements, but they just don't fit together in the right way, which leads me to believe that they are the wrong elements. I'll keep going.

Gollum 5

Here is some more process work for Gollum, who is still not quite right. I still have to work out the shapes and proportions in his face, even though I'm not sure how much of it I'm going to show in the final. I need to work out how everything fits together. The second (top image, second from left) and last face drawings are the best on here.

I still have a ways to go here. There are elements that are working but not quite clicking. Good thing I've given myself another month, eh?

Gollum 4

So, no Hobbit final this week.

Every month I spend an enormous amount of time on this project, and every month I end up stressing out way more than I should, considering this project is supposed to be for fun. It's really difficult for me do spend the appropriate amount of time every month to deliver a quality piece while still having the time to pay my bills. I have a very slim window in which to complete these pieces, and if things don't click right away it puts me in a real jam.

So, in an effort to maintain my sanity and interest in giving you consistently good pieces, I'm easing up on the Picturebook Report schedule. Instead of giving you a new piece every month, I'm instead planning on completing a piece every two months. I'll still deliver a monthly post on Picturebook Report, but half of those will be collections of some of the process work that I've done and will continue to do for this project.

I hope that the work I put forth will be worth the wait, and I sincerely appreciate everyone stopping by and commenting just being interested in general. I hope you will do the same with Picturebook Report. It is extremely difficult to put up quality work every month for no tangible reward, and the contributors to Picturebook Report are doing a damn good job.

Gollum 3

Here are some very batrachian Gollums. 20 and 26 are alright. I sort of know what I'm doing with this dude, so a lot of these are just whatever. I meant to have more but I had to send my sketchbooks away for SECRET PURPOSES. Next Hobbit piece should land next Wednesday barring unforeseen circumstances.

AN IMPORTANT QUESTION:

If I were to make prints available via etsy or bigcartel or one of those things, would you buy them? I am including my Picturebook stuff in this speculative effort, as well as some miscellaneous stuff like Sub Rosa and Bog Man and some others. Usually I am sure that nobody ones this weird stuff on their walls, and so I don't make the effort. I don't have a ton of hangable original drawings, since most of my older work was done in multiple layers, but a few of the more recent originals might be for sale as well (like Hobbit 3 and Hobbit 4). Let me know if this is worth my time and if there's anything specific you'd like to see for sale.

THANK YOU

Salon Prive

This was a small drawing I did for Gulf Life magazine about the increasingly private world of luxury car shows. The specific show in question is the Salon Prive, which I believe is held in London. No monsters or anything.

This is about double the size that it's printed at, so when I say it's a small drawing, you know what I'm talking about. Final was 91x70mm (~3.5x2.7").
